“Our apple brand is getting more popular every year in India”

It took a while for the export of Turkish apples to India to really get going, but according to Alper Kerim, owner of Turkish apple exporter Demir Fresh Fruits, the season is now finally in full swing: “Compared to last year, this season had quite a late kick off in terms of export to India, because of abundant local crops that were available. But we started Red Delicious shipments almost a month ago and are now shipping apples in full swing. The season is a long one and the most important factor of doing business is making sure we’re able to sustain through the entire season.”

Demir Fresh Fruits exports its very own apple brand, called DeBa. It has been hard work to get the brand recognised in the Indian market, Kerim explains. “Building our brand has been crucial to us. To ensure Indian importers knew of the DuBa brand, we have participated at every Asia Fruit Logistica, with the exception of the last two years due to Covid-19. We’re investing in both marketing and advertisements. But of course this alone isn’t sufficient if your quality doesn’t support your message and brand. Thankfully, we have the best quality in Turkey, which is why our DeBa brand is getting more popular every year and we are increasing our export volumes by at least two to three times.”

In terms of competition, Poland has a lot to offer in terms of volumes, says Kerim. “This year, Poland has a huge production. Other European countries are aiming to deplete their stocks as early as possible, as to not to face the absurd energy prices in 2023. Iran has lower production this year and they will finish soon. I’m expecting huge demand for Turkish apples around March, April and May.”

As the season is long, Kerim knows the company still has a lot of work to do. He does hope Indian importers will place their trust in exporters who know the Indian market from experience, to prevent disappointments: “I’m expecting huge demand through the end of season, but quality will be much more important than price. I always emphasize to Indian importers to not risk bad quality by going for lower prices from an inexperienced Turkish supplier. Not too many Turkish companies are familiar with the rules and standards that the Indian market has, which is why Indian importers should stick to the four or five large companies that have a lot of experience with the Indian market.”
