Costa Rica is in the sweet spot of Central America for growing fresh produce. “Our growing operations are located so close to the equator that the Coriolis effect does not affect the weather. Essentially, hurricanes and extreme weather events do not occur between 10 degrees south latitude and 10 degrees north latitude,” says Sofia Acón with Kapi Kapi Growers. As a result, Costa Rica provides the optimal climate for stable quality and supply year-round. “In addition to the climate, our commitment to farming innovation has helped us provide extremely stable, on-demand volume,” said Acón. Kapi Kapi grows and ships bananas and pineapples to the US, UK, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Finland, and France. Their US headquarters are located in Miami, FL.

Capacity to supply North America
More recently, the company has been making headway into the North American market. Through the addition of new acreage and improved growing methods that have enhanced yields, the company now has more than enough capacity to serve North America on a much larger scale with continuous supplies. “In addition to stable supplies, we also have long-standing relationships with multiple ocean transport companies that reliably deliver our bananas and pineapples to numerous ports spanning the US coastline. Our customized freight solutions provide customers the flexibility of reassigning port destinations based on the lowest net landed cost of goods.”
In addition to customized freight solutions, how else does Kapi Kapi differentiate from other growers in the industry? “First of all, we are a fully integrated operation with total control from production to logistics. We ensure the best working conditions in the industry, including respect of occupational health and safety standards,” shared Acón. As a commitment to their resources and communities, Kapi Kapi has received several global certifications and national awards. “We are the largest carbon neutral certified company for bananas in Costa Rica.”
Kapi Kapi doesn’t need to subcontract with other growers to meet customers’ needs and the company’s customers receive full produce traceability on every box of pineapples and bananas they sell. This includes farm origin, packing facility, and temperature tracking from field to delivery. Customers can also receive direct information about the growing areas, crop status, logistics, and volume communications.
Despite the company’s growing operations being significant in size, the company prides itself in offering flexible programs for their customers. “Whether it is custom pack sizes or private label, we are prepared to offer what our customers need to grow their business.”
