The ALDI North Group will withdraw from Denmark, in future focusing solely on stores with sustainable growth opportunities. A buyer has been found for a large proportion of the stores in Denmark in the form of REMA 1000 Denmark.
The decision to sell the businesses in Denmark is the result of long-term transformation processes at the ALDI North Group. In future, it will focus on the remaining eight European markets, which offer stronger growth and long-term development prospects.
With REMA 1000, a buyer has been found for a total of 114 of ALDI Denmark's current 188 stores. Stores not included in the transaction will also be sold in the coming weeks and months.
As part of the agreement between ALDI Denmark and REMA 1000, around 1600 of the approximately 2800 employees will also be taken over. In addition to the staff of the 114 stores, this also includes the employees of the logistics center in Kolding, for whom REMA 1000 will offer jobs in nearby Vejle and Horsens, as well as drivers from the three Danish logistics centers.
REMA 1000 is regarded as an attractive and, above all, reliable employer, which played a central role in the considerations regarding the sale of the Danish business. For employees who cannot be offered a transfer opportunity after all sales negotiations have been concluded, ALDI Denmark will work out socially acceptable solutions in close dialog with trade union representatives in order to live up to its responsibility as an employer.
The agreement between ALDI North and REMA 1000 is subject to the usual approval by the Danish competition authorities, which is expected in the coming months. The business operations of the ALDI stores in Denmark will continue for the time being. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
