Growing harvest volumes, high degree of self-sufficiency

Swiss onion sector on the upswing

The onion is one of the most important products within Swiss vegetable production. The yellow table onion is the second most important open ground crop by acreage, coming in behind the carrot. It is also among the most consumed vegetables in Switzerland, according to lid.

Annual per capita consumption is more than 5 kilos across all onion varieties. Unlike many vegetables, onions are available for purchase all year round from domestic cultivation, which is due to the high degree of self-sufficiency, which hovers around 90 percent of the total demand. Table onions are grown on about 1,300 ha throughout Switzerland.
