According to forecasts, there will be some 55,000 tons of certified fruit

Climate change will make 2022's Persimon kakis one of the most exclusive kakis in history

The Ribera del Xúquer is the only place in the world that grows kaki under the Persimon® trademark, which is owned by the Protected Designation of Origin Kaki Ribera del Xúquer. This Bright Red (Rojo Brillante) kaki has been a revolution among consumers thanks to its sweet, juicy, crisp flesh.

This differentiating feature has earned it a Protected Designation of Origin label so that consumers know that it is unique, different, and inextricably linked to the producing regions affiliated with the label.

Victims of climate change
The extreme weather conditions of 2022 have wreaked havoc in the Ribera del Xúquer region, where these persimmons are grown. In the first part of the spring, there were high temperatures and persistent rains that caused problems with the flowering and, consequently, the lack of curdling of the fruit. Subsequently, the unprecedented high temperatures in the region during summer have also limited the production volume.

As a result of this new scenario, in 2022, the fruit certified and endorsed by the collective brand will reach consumers with the same quality as always, but in a smaller quantity than ever:

2019: 115,000 tons.
2020: 102,000 tons.
2021: 95,000 tons.
2022: 55,000 tons (forecast)

Institutional support for the region-related effort
Municipal and regional administrations at the highest level showed their support for the PDO Kaki Ribera del Xúquer by attending the ceremony of presentation of the new season. The authorities were headed by the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig. He stressed the importance of the primary sector for the Valencian Community.

“Persimon® has been successful because of everybody's joint work. The successive crises have shown us that agriculture is fundamental to our economy. Having products of the highest quality and making them known, both in Spain and abroad, is essential. It is extremely important to ensure that traceability allows consumers to know where the fruit they eat comes from."

The Regulatory Board faces the challenge of promoting the start of the Persimon® season with fewer means, as its campaign budget is adjusted to production, institutional support, and the efforts of PDO members. It will be a short communication campaign, but it will focus on maximizing the visibility and prestige of the Persimon® collective brand.
