Last Thursday, the supermarket chain incorporated the first Oronules mandarins and it will add new varieties during the following weeks. Specifically, the orange of national origin will be available in Mercadona stores in the first weeks of November.
In total, the firm plans to purchase more than 200,000 tons of Spanish oranges and mandarins in the 2022/23 campaign; 150,000 tons of which will correspond to oranges and the remaining 50,000 tons to mandarins.
Mandarins are available in bulk and in 1 and 2-kg meshes, in addition to mandarin with leaves in a basket. The oranges will be sold in bulk and in 3 to 5 kg meshes.
The different citrus varieties that Mercadona offers come from the Canary Islands, the Valencian Community, Andalusia, Murcia, and Catalonia. They are supplied by the following national suppliers: SAT Canarisol, Fontestad Citrus, Frutinter, Martinavarro, Frutas Tono, Bollo International Fruits, Bagu, Dracma, Anecoop, Agronostrum, Hermanos Torres y Sucesores, Lasarte, AM Fresh Spain Citrus, Alcafruit, Vicente Giner, Agrios Selectos, V-Ros, Nufri, Mogalla, Frutas Poveda, Tana, Frugarva, Mundosol, and Perales y Ferrer.
Promoting the consumption of seasonal citrus fruits
Since 2016, Mercadona has been promoting the consumption of citrus fruits and freshly squeezed orange juice, which they sell in their Fruit and Vegetable section in three packaging formats (250 ml, 500 ml, and 1 l) made from recycled plastic.
