In less than a month, the Turkish pomegranate season is expected to get going. According to Sefik Can, account manager for Turkish fruit exporter Canlar Fruit, they’ll have a special analysis for the growers ahead of the harvest: “Our pomegranate season is expected to start by the end of September. We’ve been cooperating with more than 20 growers over the last 7 years and they have been following our agriculture engineering’s directions. For this same period of seven years, we’ve been making a special analysis in Turkey and Germany for all the growers before the actual harvest.”
Can expects to see a lower yield this season, which in turn could lead to higher prices for the pomegranates form Turkey. “Our company generally supplies to European supermarkets, and we haven’t had any pesticide problems over all those years. This year, volumes for pomegranates are looking to be approximately 20 per cent less than last year. The increasing costs of production and low yield will be reflected in the price. At the same time; war in Ukraine, gas, oil prices will have an effect on all of us.”
“Our main market is Scandinavia. However, we’re currently in the process of extending our markets in Central Europe as well as the Middle-East. It’s is getting harder to produce pomegranates every day, in the face of increasing costs in the world. We are concerned that there will be many more cost increases, especially if the crisis in Europe is not overcome in the near-future.” Can concludes.
