Dutch Brussels sprouts available in July already

Primeale United will start harvesting Dutch-grown Brussel sprouts as early as July 20. This year, these sprouts benefited from a sunny spring. "Watering at the right times and giving the plants daily attention created the ideal conditions. This, and using the new harvesting machine and rapid Sprout Cam automatic selection, ensure the sprouts are of excellent quality. They will be in stores from late July," says a Primeale United spokesperson.

"We harvest our Primeale United Brussel sprouts in the Netherlands from July until mid-March. From mid-March through April, we deliver so-called iced sprouts. We do this to offer Dutch produce to Dutch retailers for as long as possible. We get sprouts from Morocco in April, May, June, and part of July," says Frederique Sonneveld, Brussel sprouts product manager at Primeale United.

"We, thus, have fresh, own-grown Brussel sprouts all year round. Every year, we work hard to transition from Morocco to the Netherlands as early as possible. We've already perfected much in that process, but Mother Nature has to cooperate. And this year, she did. The correct temperature and hours of sunshine, and rain at the right time or irrigation undoubtedly helped," he concludes.

The flavor mostly depends on the variety. Thanks to careful selection, Brussel sprouts are generally less bitter than in the past. Primeale United, and its growers in the Netherlands, cultivate more than 25 varieties. They select these based on environmental conditions and customer demand. That ensures the availability of high-quality Brussel sprouts regardless of external factors.
