Ox heart, Violetti and Savoy cabbage in the mix at Belgian supermarkets

Three pointed cabbages together on the shop shelves

In football terms, it is all about scoring points. A Belgian supermarket currently has three points in total on its shelves. They are the pointed cabbage, the purple Violetti pointed cabbage and the new Savoy pointed cabbage from field vegetable company TB&S with growing locations in the Netherlands and Portugal. "This supermarket offers four normal pointed cabbages, two violet pointed cabbages and two savoy pointed cabbages in one EPS-packaging. A great example for retailers to introduce innovations in the vegetable section, without losing shelf space," says Coen Swager.

The managing director of TB&S hopes that more retailers will follow suit. "Most of the sales of the Violetti, for example, now go to the slicing industry, which values this purple pointed cabbage highly. Because the Violetti does not 'bleed' after cutting, it is suitable for many vegetable packages. It would be nice if retailers would also pick up this relatively new vegetable. Many supermarkets now compare the Violetti with the red cabbage, but the application possibilities are much greater. For example, you can wok or boil the Violetti, but also use it in a salad. So you have a summer and winter vegetable at the same time! In use, the Violetti is just as versatile as the pointed cabbage, which does well in retail."

Last year TB&S debuted the next innovation, namely the Savoy pointed cabbage. "We see good opportunities for this. A standard savoy cabbage is quite large and that can be a limitation for smaller households to purchase it. If there is demand, we can quickly expand to a year-round range with our own cultivation in Portugal and the Netherlands," concludes Coen.
