TROPS receives Cooperative of the Year Award

TROPS representatives, including president José Lorca and general director Enrique Colilles, traveled to Madrid to attend the General Meeting of the national confederation, which was also the stage for the presentation of the 7th Agri-food Cooperatives of Spain Awards (2022), chaired by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, and the president of Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España, Angel Villafranca.

The jury of the awards, chaired by the president of Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España, Angel Villafranca, and formed by representatives of institutions, academia and the press, unanimously chose TROPS as the cooperative of the year.

"They took into account its work with tropical fruits and its international projection, as well as its commitment to innovation and technological and sustainable development," they said.

Villafranca stated that "having cooperatives likes yours and being able to present them to society is a success and a reason for pride. What you do on a daily basis in your associations shows the importance of the cooperative world for the agri-food sector."

For his part, Minister Luis Planas stressed during the closing ceremony that cooperatives "are the backbone of the rural world, and not only from an economic point of view, but especially from a human point of view."

A great incentive for the great TROPS family
The president of TROPS, José Lorca, was in charge of accepting the Cooperative of the Year award. He said that this recognition "is a great incentive for everyone who is a part of this great agri-food family, whether they are TROPS partners or workers."

José Lorca highlighted that "we already produce more than 40% of the avocados and 50% of the mangoes grown in the Iberian Peninsula, and this is done with environmentally-friendly cultivation techniques that improve season after season, and with a sustainable use of resources." He added that TROPS has been "the first Spanish agro-food company to have certified its sustainability strategy in line with the SDG's promoted by the UN."

Being present in the markets during the 12 months of the year has allowed them to eliminate seasonality. "We have a permanent workforce of more than 700 workers all year round. This provides economic and social stability to more than 4,000 families, and motivates the population to stay in the area," he said during his speech.
