The Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin Cereza del Jerte has begun to certify the first cherries of the season, specifically those of the Navalinda variety.
"Cherry production has decreased slightly this year as a result of weather instability. It started very well, thanks to the initial weather conditions, but the subsequent cold caused a loss of sap and a delay in flowering," stated the president of the Regulatory Council, Clara Prieto. "To maintain the quality conditions that guarantee the Denomination of Origin, this year's production has been lower and estimates are the PDO will certify 500,000 to 700,000 cherries and about 4 or 5 million Picota cherries," she added.
After the certification of the Navalinda, the council continues with the Picotas del Jerte, which have four different varieties: Ambrunes, Pico Limon Negro, Pico Negro, and Pico Colorado, all of which are covered under the PDO.
