France is the Spanish export sector's second-biggest destination and Spain's leading supplier

France is the second destination for Spanish fruit and vegetable exports. In 2021, Spanish fruit and vegetable exports to the neighboring country grew by 4% in volume and 6% in value over 2020, totaling 2.3 million tons and 2,704 million euro, accounting for 18% of all Spanish fruit and vegetable exports, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise processed by FEPEX.

In recent years, Spanish fruit and vegetable exports to France have stood at nearly 2.2 to 2 .3 million tons a year. In 2016, exports stood at 2.23 million tons; in 2017 they stood at 2.19 million tons; in 2018 they amounted to 2.24 million tons; in 2019 the country shipped 2.29 million tons, in 2020 they amounted to 2.28 million tons, and in 2021 they stood at 2.3 million tons. The value of Spanish exports has been growing, from 2,237 million euro in 2016 to 2,704 million euros in 2021.

Spanish imports of fresh fruits and vegetables from France have also maintained a positive evolution in recent years, standing at 798,248 tons in 2016; 824,003 tons in 2017; 897,792 tons in 2018; 818,606 tons in 2019, and 910,790 tons in 2020. However, last year imports from France decreased by 8% in volume and 16% in value, totaling 837,737 tons and 278 million euro.

French potatoes account for more than 77% of Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable imports from France followed by French apples. Spanish exports to France, in turn, are more diversified.

In 2021, Spain exported a total of 1.5 million tons of fruits to France. Fruit exports were led by citrus fruits, exceeding 800,000 tons. The country also exported 163,000 tons of watermelon and 123,000 tons of melon to the neighboring country. Spain exported 885,935 tons of vegetables to France. These exports were led by lettuce, with 137,000 tons, courgette with 129,558 tons, pepper with 118,615 tons, and tomato with 100,179 tons.
