Claire Josse, Julien Lemiale - Carrefour:

“Our clients want more local products”

On February 24th-25th-26th, it will be possible to meet about thirty regional producers at the Carrefour supermarket of Cesson (Île-de-France). The event is being organized by Claire Josse and Julien Lemiale, in order to respond to the growing demand from the clientele for an easier access to local products. “By organizing a meeting between our customers and producers, we want to take the approach one step further. This first edition will allow the producers to promote their know-how and to present their products through tastings.”

An event very well received by the producers
This initiative stems from a desire from the clients to connect with the producers, and the idea was very well received by the producers themselves. “It was a very pleasant surprise to get so much favorable feedback from the producers. We thought recruiting 20 of them was slightly ambitious but in the end, 30 producers will come for the occasion. This way, all the products will be represented. There will be producers of apples, tomatoes, yoghurt, meat, charcuterie, cheese, and even non-food products. It is a win-win operation and a unique opportunity to meet with the final consumers and touch them directly. This brings true visibility. Other Carrefour supermarkets in Brittany have already organized similar events. The Carrefour in Quimper is working on its 5th or 6th edition. Our colleagues continue to organize such events because of the great success of the previous editions that have delighted the producers.”

Claire Josse and Julien Lemiale would like this event to continue to take place in their store. “The objective is to organize the event again each year. That is why we are asking all the local producers we work with to come and meet our clients directly in the store.”

Consumer expectations more oriented towards local rather than organic products
The survey conducted by the store has revealed a strong trend towards local products and a clear preference from consumers for local rather than organic products. “Of course, we have a significant offer of organic products. But the survey showed that today’s consumers prefer the local offer rather than the organic products. The customers also felt that local products were not promoted enough and they expressed a real desire to meet and exchange with the producers. According to them, consuming locally is now a promise of quality, sustainable development, lower greenhouse gas emissions, as well as a commitment to the local economy.”
