The Netherlands' tomato yield per acreage is 13 times higher than the Spanish yield

The Netherlands' tomato yields far exceed the yields achieved by Spain. According to data prepared by Hortoinfo from the statistical agency of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) corresponding to 2019, the Netherlands' tomato yields were 13 times higher than the global Spanish tomato yield and 3.7 times greater than the Spanish greenhouse tomato, with a production value that is 126.66% higher than the Spanish greenhouse production.

It's worth noting that practically all tomatoes in the Dutch territory are produced in greenhouses, while Spain's greenhouse tomato production only accounts for a fifth of its total production.

According to FAO data, in 2019, the Netherlands produced a total of 910 million kilos of tomatoes on 1,800 hectares, reaching a yield of 34.54 kilos per square meter. Their value at origin stood at 621.69 million euro and they had an average price of € 0.68/kg.

According to the FAO, Spain produced 5,000.56 million kilos of tomato on 56,940 hectares that year. The average yield stood at 2.67 kilos per square meter, their value at origin was 1,520.51 million euro, and their average price was € 0.30/kg.

Regarding greenhouse production, taking as an example the province of Almeria, which houses most of the Spanish greenhouses, based on data from the Observatory of Prices and Markets of the Junta de Andalucía, in the 2018/2019 campaign it reached a volume of 887.15 million kilos, the value at origin stood at 582.29 million euro, and the average yield was 9.3 kilos per square meter (almost 4 times less than in the Netherlands) and an average price of € 0.66/kg, similar to the Dutch tomato.
