"The demand for Rojo Brillante persimmons has been steady since the beginning of the season, but the demand has been so high since last week that our warehouse stocks have run out in a short time. At the moment, we think we can continue sales until the second ten days of January at the latest," said Francesca Gallicchio, business manageress at Italy's Gallicchio Frutta in Scanzano Jonico (Matera).

"Currently, from Monday to Saturday, we process more than 10 tons of persimmons per day. These volumes are then shipped to the national general markets, such as those of Milan, Florence, Turin and Bari and to supermarket chains in southern Italy. Prices are satisfactory, with a slight increase in the last few days due to the upcoming holidays. For the 250-300gr persimmons, the price can reach €1.60 per kilo, while for the smaller persimmons, which are usually not easy to place, we are seeing prices fluctuating between €0.60 and €0.80 per kilo.
"We were expecting to extend the sale of persimmons until March by using post-harvest and cold storage techniques, but the high demand is forcing us to close the season earlier than planned. We are now at 80% of the 2021/2022 season. The results so far have exceeded our expectations and Italian operators have shown us a clear indication of their appreciation."
