Zero VAT on food in Poland for six months

After the meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN), it has been confirmed that the ministers of Economy and Finance of the EU member states agreed on the text of the amendment to the VAT directive. Poland, without waiting for the formal adoption of the directive, is seeking the consent of the European Commission to introduce a zero VAT rate on food for six months.

Once an agreement is reached on the text of the VAT directive, the next step is the opinion of the European Parliament, followed by the formal adoption of the directive by the EU Council. The ministry predicts that the final decisions will be made in the first half of 2022.

“We do not want to wait for the formal adoption of the directive by the Council, which will take place already in 2022.  … Therefore, in a letter to Commissioner Gentiloni (European Commissioner for Economic Affairs) I again called for the possibility of Poland introducing a zero VAT rate on food for six months, counting on favor of the European Commission.”

The ministry stated that among the products indicated in the letter, to be temporarily covered by the 0% VAT rate, are fruits & vegetables and their products and some drinks, (containing at least 20% fruit or vegetable juice).
