From March to May, the price of tomatoes was sluggish, with the wholesale price hovering around 3 RMB per kg. In the same period of the past five years, the price was at its low or lowest level, and sales were difficult. This was due to the expansion of tomato planting in Yunnan, Sichuan and other places. The wholesale price of tomatoes in Panzhihua, Sichuan is 1.2-2RMB/kg in the Xinfadi market, of which the cost of commercialization is 0.8 RMB/kg. Due to the low price of tomatoes in the southwest, the price of tomatoes in greenhouses in the north was also relatively low.
Starting in October, the price of tomatoes has been rising. This is because early October of the previous year was the season when a large number of tomatoes produced in Shandong went on the market. At the same time this year, Shandong suffered more than 10 consecutive days of rainy weather, and the fruit setting rate of tomatoes dropped sharply. Now there are not enough tomatoes to harvest; some tomato greenhouses in Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, were crushed during the blizzard and intense cold in early November; some of the seedlings in the greenhouses were frozen to death.
Therefore, some of the tomatoes currently sold on the market were not wanted by anyone before, but now, no matter what kind of quality they are, they're better than no tomatoes at all. Some merchants predicted that the supply of tomatoes is unlikely to recover before the Spring Festival.
