In the Italian region of Trentino Alto Adige, the attention towards the environment is paramount, which is why a company from the province of Bolzano has designed new crates that are both functional and beautiful. They weigh 20% less than conventional crates.
Palbox has conceived these crates, called Ivy, and has presented them to fruit traders, representatives of South Tyrolean and Trentino institutions and experts in sustainability and logistics.

"When the crates are stacked, it looks like a wall of ivy. However, the whole idea stems from a provincial law that requires crates to be in different shades of green, which we wanted to take full advantage of both from both an aesthetical and an efficiency point of view," said manager Daniele Scherbi.
The visual aspect merges with the technical one and the crates weigh 20% less than traditional crates.
Ivy, inspired by nature, is a large crate made of HDPE (high-density polyethylene) that sets new standards in the field of logistics management, design and product innovation and makes an important contribution to a more responsible development of apple logistics, among other aspects.
The original design, which was developed with a view to perfect integration into the landscape context in which the crates are used, best expresses the concept behind Ivy, namely environmentally conscious resource management. Indeed, at the end of its life cycle it is 100% recycled and with the new material Palbox aims to fabricate other products. Thus, the crates fit perfectly into the logic of the circular economy and have been awarded the Plastic, Second Life label by the Institute for the Promotion of Plastic Recycling.
Ivy was designed by MM Design, of which Alex Terzariol is the representative. "When designing, we thought of the large walls of stacked crates used by fruit cooperatives and wondered how to better harmonize it with the landscape. We took inspiration from ivy and used it to choose a texture to achieve a natural aesthetic. When the crates are stacked, the effect resembles that of the ivy and a continuous pattern is formed with a unique effect."
Founded in 1972, Palbox is specialized in the production of large PEHD crates for the agricultural sector.
With 50 years of experience and three strategically located plants in Europe, the company is responsible for approximately 90% of the entire European crate production. Thanks to a sophisticated production system, the company promotes the modernization and development of apple logistics and today is able to recycle 100% of plastic packaging.
