Océane and Terrena are joining forces to become the reference in the fresh produce basin of Nantes and to take part in structuring the supply.
On the 28th of October 2021, the cooperatives entered into exclusive negotiations in order to pave the way for the grouping of their open field producers within the Océane cooperative.
The goal of the cooperatives is to come to an agreement on the practical details of this merger project by mid-December 2021. The implementation should take place between January 1st and March 31st 2022, after final approval by the boards of the cooperatives.
By the end of this project, 26 vegetable producers of the Terrena cooperative will have joined the 47 producers of the Océane cooperative. Océane should then consolidate its position as the leading actor in the Nantes basin with 75 member producers, 180 million euros [209 million USD] of revenue (including 60 million euros [70 million USD] for field crops), and more than 100,000 tons of vegetables marketed each year.
The open field producers involved from the Terrena cooperative would then bring their expertise to Océane in terms of export and industrial production, which would complete the know-how of Océane, mainly oriented towards French supermarkets.
The goal is to be the reference in the Nantes fresh produce basin and to participate in structuring the offer, securing and improving the profitability of the producers
With this project, Océane will offer volumes that will help attract or secure clients with the capacity to supply the product. The massification will help globalize the volumes in order to valorize all the plantings.
Finally, by using the strengths of each PO of origin, Océane will improve the sector’s performance on:
- cultivation itineraries/production techniques,
- production coordination,
- volumes/product massification,
- logistic costs,
- operating costs.
Terrena will also continue to support the producers in their supply activities, as well as in 4th range processing.
