Mesfruits has just started harvesting its Snow apples, marketing this new variety for the third consecutive year. The climate this year has not been very favorable, with the April frost, cold spring and a rainy summer. In spite of all this, the Snow variety has done well and a good harvest is expected. “The cool temperatures at night in the past weeks have given the fruit an exceptionally intense red coloration,” explains Jean-Nicolas Blouet of Mesfruits.
The harvest started last week in the French Alps and southwestern France. This year, the harvest of Snow apples, conventional and organic, will reach about 500 tons. A harvest which has nearly doubled compared to last year.
“We organized a technical meeting on the day before the harvest to present the variety to our producers. And the agronomic feedback has been very satisfactory. Everyone seems to agree that it is an easy apple to produce. The variety is tolerant to scab, does not require any chemical thinning on the flowers, or any manual thinning on the fruit. The trees do not need a lot of pruning during the first years and finally, the apples can be picked in one go thanks to their easy color. The variety is very productive and no sign of alternation has been observed on the trees in full production. Another advantage observed this year is that the blooming season came late, after the Golden variety, which strongly reduces the risk of frost.”
As for the quality of the apples this year, Mesfruits is also satisfied. “The fruits have a nice intense red coloration and the sizes are interesting. On the inside, the flesh is very white and oxidizes slowly. The fruit is sweet, crunchy and juicy with a nice sugar/acidity balance.”
