Girò Italia Srl

Girò focuses on ultra-light eco-friendly packaging

"When it comes to packaging, the market and, mostly, the big retail chain are looking for an alternative to plastic. Although the fresh produce sector seems to be less invasive, as it uses it more rationally, we are still working to find suitable solutions to help the green revolution and safeguard the Planet," explains Franco Locati, sales manager at packaging specialist Girò Italia.

"We believe possible options include single-material light plastic that is easy to recycle or sustainable, compostable or biodegradable materials that can help reduce the environmental impact caused by sourcing raw materials and avoid creating a waste surplus as, although compostable or recyclable, materials are still difficult to dispose of in large quantities. This problem contrasts mainly the reduction of the so-called Carbon Footprint, i.e. the total amount of CO2 emissions."

Girò is focusing on new projects precisely to meet market demands.

"In 2020 we presented our EcoGirò packaging, which is fully compostable: we have been the first to introduce a 100% compostable woven net solution aimed at obtaining packaging that still showcases the product. EcoGirò 100% meets the market needs for something that is visible, light weight and practical. It is very appreciated by our clients and it can be used also with machines not built by Girò."

"We have observed how, rather than getting lighter, many are opting for heavy solutions made with different materials. We are convinced that, the heavier the packet, the more waste is created: more weight and volume mean less sustainability. This is why our objective is to create agile super-light packaging that lets fruit breathe while making it visible, as consumers want to see what they buy."

Girò is always studying new technologies thanks to its own R&D laboratory supported by a highly-skilled team that tests new solutions together with University departments with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of plastic

"It is a very ambitious project that will lead us to a new innovative material, eco-friendly and lightweight, that will be introduced to the market at a lower price compared to the current compostable material. In addition, with the added value of being used with existing machinery. Over the past few years, consumers have become more aware when it comes to solutions that make our life more sustainable and respectful of the environment."

Giró will attend Fruit Logistica on February 9th-11th 2022, where it will present the new 100% cellulose Girsac, a product that can meet current market needs: just think that a 2 kg packet can be obtained using only 14 grams of material. What is more, the new material can be disposed of as paper, as confirmed by the external certifying body that assessed it."
