Slight improvement for fennel

After months characterized by a stagnant market with prices often below production costs, things have improved slightly over the past couple of weeks, as reported by Marco Babbi from fennel specialist Finò.

"Harvesting is in full swing in Romagna and quality is very good. Unlike in spring, which was characterized by weather problems, the produce we are currently harvesting is perfect from all points of view."

But what matters the most is that the market has started to be more responsive. "Something is finally moving. While we cannot jump for joy yet, at least we can breathe. We are also seeing that the big retail chains are responding well, while wholesale markets are having more difficulty at times."

Finò exports half of its production. "The majority of exports will start in the next few weeks. We are working well abroad at the moment, but the potential is not yet fully expressed."

Babbi also expressed his concern for the increase in the price of raw materials: "the last electricity bill saw a 30% increase and packaging costs are also on the up. Of course this erodes margins. If we want to prevent the chain from collapsing, everyone must do their part until we go back to 'normal'. It is not possible to pile everything on the weakest links of the chain."

Finò has a wide range of formats available "Loose or packaged, we can meet all client needs. I have seen that the packaged produce has become more popular in many supermarkets, as it is more appealing and lasts for longer."
