The company Val’prim started harvesting its new yellow onions at the end of June, with a delay of 8 to 10 days due to rainfall. “We started with the yellow onions, followed by the shallots, red and pink onions, echalions and sauciers,” explains Nathalie Manceau, general director of Val’Prim.
This year, the weather has strongly impacted the production, from sowing to the harvest. “The dry weather had an impact on emergence, but protected us from crop hazards. The spring frost favored bolting on the bulbs and the rain at the end of the cycle favored the development of mildew and other diseases. It is still too early to draw any conclusions for the 2021 campaign, but the start of the bulb campaign has been particularly complicated.”
Val’Prim is expecting to harvest about 10,000 tons of onions and 2,000 tons of shallots this year, volumes which are almost the same as last year.
At the moment, the company proposes yellow, red and pink onions, shallots, echalions, onions sauciers, as well as white, purple and smoked garlic on 5 production basins in Anjou, Brittany, Beauce, Hauts-de-France and Bourgogne, for a total surface of 300 hectares.
