After more than a year at a slower pace due to the Covid pandemic, the truffle growers of Bugey are full of hope for this year’s harvest that looks very promising.
“Our union now has almost 90 members. All of them have planted truffle trees with the hope of harvesting one day. The oldest plantations are 20 years old, others are more recent, but we see that each year, the number of members who start producing truffles increases. The truffle market is an excellent window to promote the Bugey truffle, and a nice tool offered by the union to its members in order to sell their production a few days before Christmas,” explains Robert Vellet, vice-president of the union of Bugey truffle growers.
According to most of the truffle growers, the conditions have been rather favorable this year, so the season looks promising.
“This plantation goes back 9 years. It has hazelnut trees, as well as holm and downy oak trees. More than 30% of the trees burn, which means that the grass around the trees gets burned. In theory, it is a sign that the mushroom has taken hold and production is imminent, which I really hope is the case,” explains Franck Brun.
