Perano Enrico & Figli

Processing tomatoes still going strong

"We are pushing the productive capacity of our plants to the max to reach the end of the campaign with volumes of around 110,000 tons of tomatoes (oblong, round and local varieties, both traditional and organic). It is not an easy campaign, but we should reach mid-October with good-quality produce that meets the parameters required by Italian and foreign big retail chains. More produce is being sold under the Il Galleto brand compared to 2020," reported Enzo Perano, CEO at Perano Enrico & Figli.

Perano Enrico & Figli is one of the largest canning businesses in southern Italy, whose brand identifies a wide range of fully-Italian tomato products. It processes and commercializes a wide range of tomatoes under the Galletto brand, with overall volumes of around 110,000 tons. The third generation of entrepreneurs is currently running the company, whose presence is significant in both domestic and foreign big retail chains as a private brand or private label.

"The problems that characterized the 2021 campaign include the lack of raw materials for packaging (tin plate and capsules) and the lack of skilled and unskilled labor, so much so that it has become very hard to find drivers and carriers. Only the price of raw material remains stable thanks to 25% more raw material due to the larger areas dedicated to the production of industry tomatoes and higher yields per hectare."

Difficilmente interpretabile la campagna del pomodoro da industria del sud Italia

"Despite the surplus of produce especially from the Capitanata area (Apulia), prices remained in line with the framework agreement between the agricultural and industrial sides in central-southern Italy until mid-September - €105/ton for round tomatoes and €115/ton for oblong tomatoes. The quotation of cherry tomatoes was established at €10/ton. Organic tomatoes - for which demand is substantially stable compared to 2020 - are expected to cost 40% more than traditional ones. Prices increased slightly during the third week of September due to the increase in costs in every step of the production chain."

Pomodoro da industria: prezzi in rialzo trainati dai costi elevati del packaging

"Of course it will be overall cost factors that will determine the price of processed products, if we consider that not only logistics and packaging, but also the price of energy and gas and the cost to dispose of waste material have increased."

Dinamiche commerciali difficili per i derivati di pomodoro

"The brand is increasingly found in retail chains, and Internet sales are growing as well. We have also developed recipes for new ready sauces, for which we are testing the trends and markets of reference. We want to liven up demand, be even more competitive and try to improve our profitability for a product that guarantees margins only when it comes to large numbers."
