The harvest of apples in Poland is in full swing, but it’s been a wet harvest thanks to all the rain. Luckily, the weather conditions in Poland have resulted in good coloring on most varieties of the apples and according to one exporter the quality is much better than it was in the previous season.
According to Jan Nowakowski, manager of Polish apple exporter Genesis Fresh, the apple season in Poland has had a good start: “The harvest and export of the Gala-varieties have already started, with Golden varieties starting in a little over a month’s time. Current demand is quite solid, we’re seeing good interest in the Gala apples this season. It’s a good thing for us, as we have large volumes of Gala available and the quality we have is also very satisfying. We’ll be able to send our apples to various continents, be it Europe, Africa or Asia this season. We haven’t planned to enter new markets specifically but are always open to check out new opportunities.”
Although it’s been a good season both before and during harvest, Poland has been dealing with a lot of rains. Nowakowski states this is a significant improvement from the usual spring frosts. “Sales are going well at the moment, but it’s been a wet harvest. There was rain during the summer as well as rain during the harvest, but at the same time the climate has done wonderful things for the apples this year. Thanks to cold nights and warm days the color on most of the apples’ varieties are looking really good this year.”
“And thanks to the lack of spring frosts this year, as well as the limited amount of hail we’ve experiences, the quality of the apples is really much better than it was last year. Of course, there were some regions in Poland that did get damaging hail, but overall this is only a small portion of the country’s total harvest. Overall I expect this to be a much better season for us than last year.” Nowakowski concludes.
