Russian Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko has emphasized the importance of increasing the import of agricultural products from the CIS countries. The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) currently unites the nations of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.
This move should mitigate the growing rates of food prices. According to the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan, Russia primarily intends to increase supplies from Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and Belarus.
The increase in imports will ensure the stabilization of food prices and stimulate the development of national agricultural producers by increasing competition. The shortage of some products will also be covered, at the expense of other countries.
As of August 10, 2021, fruit and vegetable exports from Turkmenistan to Russia increased by 93% y-o-y, from 16,900 tons to 32,700 tons. The country has significantly increased the supply of tomatoes from 16,400 tons to 31,900 tons, a 94% growth compared to the same period last year. During the period, the import of Turkmen carrots increased from 40 tons to 302 tons.
