Reya, the watermelon for early transplants in Italy

We are in the middle of the watermelon campaign, which is proceeding quite well in the Taranto area (Apulia - Italy), with Ciro Martone, agronomist at Alma Seges.

Ciro Martone

Some of our members who planted Reya watermelons on our recommendation are having excellent results. This is a relatively new variety, which is very satisfying. The first reason is its earliness. In this case, the crop was planted on 2 April and the harvest began on 25 June. Reya is a uniformly sized product, ranging in size from 10 to 15 kg. The flesh is a deep red colour and the flesh is quite firm. It is very tasty and has a high Brix level.

Reya is a variety with good vigour and adequate vegetative-productive balance, which allows abundant and continuous flowering throughout the cycle. Good leaf coverage protects the ripening fruit. The fruit set and productivity are excellent, with 4-5 fruits per plant. This watermelon also plays a key role in many Italian traditional holidays and is both refreshing and tasty.

The agronomist shared his experience with the Reya watermelon in the video below.

The members of Alma Seges operate in the most specialized fruit and vegetable areas of Southern Italy, in particular in Campania (in the Piana del Sele (Salerno), in the Neapolitan area, in the upper Casertano and in Apulia (in particular in the areas of Bari and Taranto). The most important productions are lettuces, endives, fresh-cut lettuce, celery, parsley, asparagus, artichokes, spinach, strawberries, melons and watermelons, peaches and nectarines, citrus fruits.

Each year Alma Seges grows around 1000 hectares of fruit and vegetables, 700 hectares of which are under protected cultivation. Production is selected and processed in 10 facilities. Every day, the organization's technicians are engaged in experimentation, assistance and quality control on the products and their processing systems.
