Price of shipping remains high, so exporters often opt for overland transport

Cost of overland transport between China and Eastern Europe continues to rise

The price of shipping has been exceptionally high since October last year and shows no sign of coming down. In addition, the problem of delayed containers is extremely severe. Many harbors experience a shortage of workers and the processing of containers takes longer than usual. Container ships can experience delays of 2-3 days every time they enter a port, which can add as much as 10-15 days to their journey.

Jining Greenstream Fruit and Vegetables Co., Ltd. is an export company specialized in ginger trade. According to manager Zhang, spokesperson for the company, "under regular conditions the journey from Shandong to Moscow should only take around 45 days, but inefficient loading has slowed down the journey to 60 days. As for teh price, that used to be around 3,000 USD per container, and is now as much as 9,000-10,000 USD per container."

"And now the price of overland transport to Russia is rising as well. The current price for overland transport is around 4,000-5,000 USD per truck. Many exporters shifted to overland transport when the price of overseas transport began to rise in October last year."

Manager Zhang also explained that overseas market demand is weakening. Traders in Western Europe and Eastern Europe are not that eager to buy, but there is some demand from the Middle East.

In addition to fresh ginger, Jining Greenstream Fruits & Vegetables also exports garlic, pomelo, and lemons. The company has an annual export volume of 2,000 containers.
