Since May 1st 2021, E.Leclerc supermarkets no longer offer plastic bags in their fruit and vegetable aisles.
The plastic has been replaced by organic cotton nets, washable and reusable, and kraft bags from sustainably managed forests and with recyclable paper windows. This is a new step for the company, less than a year after having replaced its plastic bags at checkout with burlap bags, thereby saving nearly 7,000 tons of plastic.
This new change will help save 1,300 tons, or 370 million additional plastic bags. In total, E.Leclerc will reduce its annual footprint by more than 8,350 tons.
Consumers will now have 100% cotton nets, washable and reusable, from organic agriculture, certified GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), and sold in sets of 3 or individually. As for the kraft bags with crystal paper windows, they are 100% recyclable, contain zero plastic, come from sustainably managed forests and are available in different formats.
