"This initiative has benefited the nutrition of more than 3,000 low-income families in Surco"

Peru's largest vertical organic garden donates its vegetables to soup kitchens

Peru's largest vertical organic garden is located in 685 m² of El Aire park in Surco. The garden has more than 600 linear meters of panels with 11,000 pots made out of recycled plastic bottles that produce 400 to 1,500 vegetables every 20 days.

In order to take care and manage these varieties, the municipality has implemented specialized installation and harvesting techniques, as well as specialized preparation of quality seedlings and fertilization methods with organic matter to avoid the presence of pests or diseases.

This initiative, which began in 2020, has been promoted by the Municipality of Santiago de Surco to contribute to the economic, nutritional, and environmental development of the district through the production of nutritious and high-protein foods that are distributed to the 24 soup kitchens of the commune.

"This is part of the strategies we promote for the social and economic development of the residents of Surco that have been benefiting the nutrition of more than 3,000 low-income families in the district," stated Mayor Jean Pierre Combe Portocarrero.

Surco's vertical bio-garden produces lettuce, spinach, coriander, parsley, Chinese onions, radishes, carrots, beets, and medicinal species such as thyme, spearmint, mint, and rosemary.
