Potato Weekly - 12 March 2021

UK potato industry highly anticipates reopening of hospitality sector

  • With the economy unlocking and weather improving, there is an element of optimism. Hope that demand could be re-energised is emerging as we close towards the end of the 2020/21 marketing year.
  • Students returning to schools this week in England has stimulated an element of, albeit limited, demand on the free-buy market.
  • The wider industry highly anticipates the opening of hospitality, while demand remains relatively subdued on free-buy, with the majority fulfilled on contract.

Packing

  • Free-buy trade remains relatively unchanged on the week, with Whites demand remaining slow.
  • Reports highlight a further tightening of Maris Piper supplies, supporting prices and maintaining their large premium over Whites..

Bags

  • Week-on-week trade in bags is described as being stand on from last week.
  • Quality is becoming key, with top quality varieties that have been stored well starting to feel support in a lacklustre market.
  • The bags trade is hoping for a busy summer if easing of lockdown restrictions goes to plan.
