New organic wholesaler opens at Hannover wholesale market

"There is a potential for further development"

For several months now, the Hannover wholesale market has had a new company trading on its premises. Under the name Bio Großhandel Hannover, Jacqueline Schreiber offers a large selection of organically grown fruits and vegetables. The segment, targeted by the company, which is based at Stand 8, consists of organic traders, weekly market suppliers, restaurateurs, kindergartens and farm stores, Mario Schreiber reported.

In September 2020, the new company opened stand sales at the local Am Tönniesberg trading area. "As a new entrepreneur, it is definitely somewhat difficult to gain a foothold. Fortunately, my wife grew up in the fruit wholesale business, so she is well-connected in the industry. In addition to this, we are the only specialized organic trader at the wholesale market."

From the organic store to the gastronomers
Within a very short time, the company has been able to attract a wide range of customers for its services. Schreiber: "Not only common organic stores, but also regional weekly market traders and farm stores are showing their  appreciation. We also notice that more and more restaurants want to switch to 'organic'. As soon as restaurants are allowed to reopen, we want to hit the ground running in this sector, too."

Compared to what's happening conventionally, Schreiber says the organic produce business is obviously more seasonal. "Crops tend to be more sensitive to weather and the marketing window is relatively shorter. Italian organic table grapes, for example, are only available between August and November. Currently, we are preparing for the first arrivals of Spanish organic stone fruits, which will start to arrive in about four weeks. On the other hand, there are year-round items as well, such as South Tyrolean or German organic apples, that we are able to offer almost year-round."

Rising organic demand
On the procurement side as well as on the sales side, the organic sector in the greater Hanover area is developing relatively quickly. "We source a lot of things directly from regional producers, whether it's vegetables, seasonal fruit or potatoes. At the same time, the number of regional organic stores is increasing, and so is the demand for organic fruits and vegetables. There is a potential for further development."

In addition to the wide selection of fresh produce, the organic wholesaler also offers complementary oils, eggs and honey. "We are finding that people want to buy the full organic range exquisitely from a fixed partner. Therefore, we want to gradually develop into a full-range supplier over the next few years."
