Good prospects for Dutch asparagus

Last week, The Greenery auctioned the first Dutch asparagus of the season. These came from Ron and Peter Martens of Tienray. The prospects for the coming season are good.

On Tuesday, 2 March, the auction began at precisely 06:50. On offer - the first asparagus from a heated greenhouse. "The first top-quality asparagus - AA extra white - fetched top prices of €20 to almost €22/kg," says Ary van der Waal, The Greenery's Auction and Wholesale Salesman.

"Now, we'll begin auctioning 100 5kg trays. But, given the nice weather, this supply will increase every day, Several growers have now started harvesting. The supply should be reasonably good. If the good weather holds, we expect the mini tunnels to start producing asparagus before Easter."

Expectations for the coming season
“The coming season is expected to be good. COVID-19 has made people more aware than ever that fruit and vegetables contribute to improved immunity and a healthy weight," say Theo Jegerings and Marco Meijer. They're Asparagus Salesmen at The Greenery Growers.

"That's why there's a huge demand for asparagus from various channels. Asparagus acreage in Germany and the Netherlands has shrunk. And the demand is increasing. So, we expect to achieve good prices next year. Our growers and we want to get the best out of the market."

"Successful marketing"
“We had successful activities in 2020. However, we want to improve on those this season. We have another great plan for 2021. Asparagus will get plenty of attention from our main retail customers," says Product Marketer Renske Hartensveld-Ras. "We'll continue with the generic campaign with the Dutch Asparagus Center."

"It will feature an improved mix of online, social, and mass media such as TV. The Greenery is also refocusing on the #SNACKSPERGE campaign via our own Fresh Harvest platform. During the season, we'll be featuring new delicious recipes with asparagus. We want to persuade people to buy asparagus."
