Sandy Booth - New Forest Fruit

First new season asparagus on the shelves

Spring is in the air and that means the first British asparagus are on the shelves. At New Forest Fruit the first harvest is running around a week later than last year due the recent wet and cold spell.

"Initial volumes are low at the moment as we wait for the nice sunny weather," said Sandy Booth, Direct and owner of New Forest Fruits based in The New Forest, Hampshire.

The company has sent the season's first asparagus to Waitrose this week.

"We grow asparagus on four hectares and expect to harvest 30 tonnes this season. Our asparagus is marketed under the The New Forest Fruit Co. Ltd brand."

The demand from retail is strong, but due to lock down the food service is still slow.
