The opinion of Piera Torti of the company F.lli Torti

Stagnation continues for onions and potatoes

The onion market is stagnant, and the same is true for potatoes, if not worse. "White onions are a little more in demand because it is an Italian product that is holding up well, but on the whole, demand is low," said Piera Torti, sales manager of F.lli Torti, a company in the province of Alessandria, Italy.

Red and golden onions have kept their prices as normal, "but sales are roughly the same. The market is static. From October onward we are paying over the odds what we had sold in the two months of the first lockdown."

The Torti company, in recent years, has exported white onions to Great Britain, "but in this period, even in the UK, consumption is very low".

Even on the potato front, the scenario is not the best. "Italian potato stocks are running low. I believe that we will run out of national product towards the end of February, and then continue with French tubers. The hope is that from March onwards there will be a recovery of the Ho.Re.Ca channel and an upturn of the sector. The current situation of uncertainty is worryingly stagnant".
