"If you compare to two weeks ago, we are in a totally different world," says Rien Paans of Verfru Europe from Tarragona, who, together with his son Arthur, focuses on supplying Spanish open ground vegetables to customers in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Here on the coast we didn't get snow, but it has been very cold. At night we have temperatures just under freezing and during the day its 5-6 degrees. This has caused production to slow to quite a halt. The availability of pointed cabbage is still reasonable, but the supply of cauliflower is 20-25% of what we normally do."
"The prices have therefore shot up. At the auctions here the 'dirty' broccoli is going for 2-2.50 Euro per kilo. Two weeks ago that price was still 3.50 Euro per box. We are still supplying some broccoli from Murcia, but that supply has halved too. All in all the supply is much lower, but there are few issues with quality."

"Every year we have a cold week here in Spain, so that isn't hugely shocking, but the amount of snow that fell in Madrid was truly bizarre. Transport could experience some issues due to this. It's an advantage to Dutch customers that a considerable amount of transporters are avoiding England at the moment.
