Belgian exporting company, Gemex, plans to considerably expand its current building in the summer. "We've been here since 2016; not that long," says Sven Jordens, a manager of Gemex. "At the moment, we have eight loading docks. But we're quite cramped during the busy spring period. We've quickly outgrown the available space. That's why we've decided to expand the building. We can do so because, at the start, we bought a large site."
“We'll be adding seven loading docks and extra refrigeration. The logistics area will also become much bigger. A total of 4.000m2 will be added. We've grown so rapidly in recent years due to our ideal location. We are close to the German border. That means we can drive a lot further into Germany. But, considering the driving times and rest stops, you don't get very far into that country. We're closer to the growers too."
Brexit won't affect Gemex, but COVID-19 has. "After years of growth, our turnover is four percent down this year. That's actually not so bad. I think we can count ourselves lucky that we're getting off so easily. However, we haven't yet gotten rid of this virus. We'll have to wait and see what happens next year," says Sven. At the end of last week and on Monday it was busy because of the Christmas sales. "Yesterday was quieter, and Christmas shopping will be done by tomorrow. It wasn't as busy as in other years."
“If all goes to plan, we can begin construction in the summer. We hope the expansion will be ready by the end of 2021. And that, in 2022, we'll be able to serve our clients from a new, spacious building," concludes Sven.
