Christophe Laffon, of Hnos. Fernández:

"Biomarket will serve as a showcase for Spanish organic products to other markets"

Last week, Biomarket, the first wholesale market devoted exclusively to organic products in Spain, located in Barcelona, launched its commercial activity. One of the companies with the most presence in this market is Hnos. Fernández, which has three stalls offering organic products and services to its customers and suppliers.

“Many companies come to Barcelona's market, Mercabarna, to buy fruit and vegetable products, since thanks to its logistics network it is a great location from which to export to other countries. We think that Biomarket can serve, therefore, as a showcase for Spanish organic products to other foreign markets,” says Christophe Laffon, commercial director of Hnos. Fernández. "As a company, it will give continuity to our marketing of organic fruit and vegetables and greatly support us in the sales to food and greengrocer stores," he says.

The company has been developing its organic product business for years, with Canary bananas playing a fundamental role. “We are strongly involved with Canary bananas, for which we have our own farms on the islands currently in the process to obtain the organic certification. It is a product with great added value, appreciated by consumers because it is grown domestically, which fits in perfectly with organic culture and further strengthens those values. In fact, in Spain, the Canary banana is the fruit that is growing the most when it comes to organic production, so, with the support of European administrations, we think that it will manage to stand out from other products,” he says.

Besides Canary bananas, Grupo Fernández also has a remarkable organic supply of products such as pineapples, imported bananas, Zespri kiwis, apples and a wide range of exotics, all sold under its own brands dedicated exclusively to organic products: Cuqui Bio and Orsero Bio.

According to Christophe Laffon, the consumption of organic products will continue to grow in Spain, especially among the younger population. “The consumption of organic products was insignificant about 6 years ago in Spain, if we compare it with countries like France or Germany, where they have historically always been a few years ahead in terms of sensitivity to environmental or health issues. In Spain, we see that those showing interest in organic are usually millennials with children and a medium to high purchasing power. We think that the consumption of organic products will continue to grow, because there will be more supply and, therefore, they will become increasingly popular. There will also be increasing awareness of sustainability and health issues, which will motivate us to look for the organic quality seal.”

"This new commercial location is giving a boost to the organic sector and has become our number one platform for the marketing of organic products nationally and internationally," says the commercial director of Hnos. Fernández.
