“The trade is still hectic,” says Peter de Blaeij of the Dutch/Belgian company of the same name. "We can't complain at all. Since the coronavirus broke out, it's been very busy. We, and our clients, are doing very well. Sales were great, especially during the strawberry and asparagus seasons. Soon, it will be Christmas. That's usually a busy period for us. But I think sales will go through the roof this year. If the hospitality industry stays closed, I expect people to go shopping at the supermarket or their local greengrocer."
There's currently a lot of demand for citrus.“Clementines are selling well. There's enough supply, and the quality is excellent. The prices are also good. They're not too low, and so everyone can make some money. There's also a great demand for apples, imported beans, dates, onions, and fresh herbs. Fruit juice sales are great too. People want vitamins to stay healthy. They, therefore, love Schulp's juices."
“But, some products have fallen away this year. We mainly supply retailers. Some of our clients, however, supply the hospitality sector and schools. During the first lockdown, schools had to close, so they didn't need any fruit. Schools are allowed to stay open in this lockdown, so school fruit is still needed. Our clients who deliver to the hospitality businesses are taking less. But, retailers are making up for that. We're generally satisfied. This crisis hasn't hit us hard. People have to keep eating, regardless. So, our sector is well-positioned," concludes Peter.
