The Sicilian zucchini and bell pepper market is not looking very good, and the current situation does not please operators. FreshPlaza talked about it with Antonio Morreale, administrator of Bio Hortus in Palma di Montechiaro (AG), Sicily.

"The table grape season is coming to an end and it has not been particularly good. Although quality was satisfactory, the price did not play in our favor. In addition, over the past few weeks, the mild temperatures accelerated the ripening, especially for Italia grapes. Fruits are therefore still nice and tasty, but they already rather ripe on the plants."
"Bell peppers are doing a little better, as prices are slightly recovering after a discouraging start of the campaign. The increase in prices is due to the little quantities available caused by excessive heat during setting. Nonetheless, we remain a point of reference as we are known for being reliable and sustainable producers."
"As for dark green zucchini, the season started with high prices (as much as €2/kg at production), which have since dropped to €0.50-€0.70 due to the presence of foreign produce with low production costs on the domestic market. We need to be good as producers and convey the value of our products, which certainly have more guarantees from an ethical and phytosanitary point of view."
