René Eekcels, Baskin:

"Folding basket for EPS crates with woven look shines new light on presentation on fresh produce shelf"

Baskin is one of the first in Europe to supply food-safe baskets for supermarkets since 2008. "We have supplied plenty of bread departments, but we have developed a robust basket especially for the fruit and vegetable department we that can withstand the harsh conditions that heavy and moist fruit and vegetable products often bring with them," says René Eekels. "By opting for black plastic, the presentation of fruit and vegetables has been put in a different light and the products presented come out much better and fresher due to the contrast in colour!"

This unusual approach did not go unnoticed and attracted a lot of interest from the market. "In 2017 we were approached by Euro Pool Systems GmbH to find a solution for an improved presentation for their EPS crates. The condition that this had to meet was a challenge: to make the presentation of the EPS crates as beautiful as in the Baskin baskets, but without affecting the benefits of the pool system ", says René.

The sleeves, called Smart Edge Baskets (SEB), have now been patented and meet all requirements. "The crates had to be concealed as much as possible, easy to implement, the design had to be individually adaptable to the customer's wishes, the wares needed to not have to be repackaged and furthermore these sleeves had to be robust and resistant to moisture, dirt and handling," René sums up. "After various test locations in supermarkets, we have further developed different types, so that every supermarket manager can see which type is most suitable for their situation!"
