Paper packaging for potatoes in Trentino

Azienda Agricola Marina was established in 2008 and boasts a small production of potatoes for fresh consumption of a high quality. The produce is packaged in recyclable paper. The company started with 5,000 sq m, while now crops cover 2.5 hectares and produce around 100 tons a year. For the purposes of crop rotation, the company also started producing borlotti beans in 2016 with a yield of approx. 500/600 kg a year.

"Potatoes are grown in the Bleggio area (Trento) in clayey soils that help develop excellent organoleptic qualities. They are stocked naturally, without using anti-sprouting agents. The varieties grown are Cicero and Jelly, but we are constantly looking for cultivars resistant to diseases and suitable for our climate," explains owner Giordano Reversi.

Potatoes were initially placed in 10 kg bags, but 2 kg paper bags have been recently introduced which are fully recyclable and boast a new graphic design.

"We were looking for an eco-friendly solution with an appealing yet ecological print that would comply with the circular economy philosophy."

Harvesting phase

"We needed to automate a process that used to be performed manually and we are proud to be the first company in Trentino Alto Adige to package our potatoes in this 'plastic-free' solution made of paper and cellulose hydrate that can be fully recycled as paper (Aticelca 501/20 class A)".

Giordano Reversi

"The ideal microclimate that forms inside the hermetically sealed bags prolongs the shelf-life of potatoes, maintaining their high organoleptic qualities for longer than when using nets."

"Potatoes do not turn green because they are protected from the light. We want to our products to reach the tables of consumers unaltered so their aroma and flavor can be fully appreciated."
