Pierre Leroy, SARL Leroy:

“French apples and pears benefit from a dynamic market”

“The demand for apples and pears has been good since the beginning of the season and sales are still going very well. The fruits are of good quality and caliber.” explains Pierre Leroy, manager of SARL Leroy. The company produces and markets apples, pears, as well as some vegetables. Besides the 150 hectares it cultivates, SARL Leroy also sells the products of a dozen other producers.

Low apple harvest
“We have now harvested 80% of our apples. Like almost everywhere in France, our harvest has also been quite low. The production is 10 to 15% lower than last year.” SARL Leroy, which has been producing since 1821, offers organic and conventional apples.

Reverse situation for the pear
“As far as pears are concerned, the situation is completely different. We have had a normal harvest, maybe even more than usual.” SARL Leroy offers three different varieties of pears: the Conference, William and Comice. “Our William season has ended. We now sell mostly the Conference variety and the results are very satisfactory.”

According to Pierre, it was easy to find labor for the harvest this year. “With the sanitary crisis, factories slowed down their production. Therefore, there were more people available to come work in our orchards.”

Dynamic market for the squash
Besides apples and pears, SARL Leroy also produces and sells a wide range of vegetables, like squash and sweet potatoes. The entire vegetable production is organic. “The market is very dynamic for the red kuri squash, butternut squash and their sub-varieties. However, the harvest is a bit low because it has been quite hot.”

“We are ending the zucchini season, a product which is progressing in terms of surface area. We can finally say that we have had a classic season in terms of sales and production.”
