At what time of year are the most fruit and vegetables wasted in Spain?

According to the latest report on food waste published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA) and analyzed by Too Good To Go, between spring and summer 2019, more than 260 million kilograms of unused fruits and vegetables were thrown away in Spain. This figure is 5.3% higher than the amount of fresh food wasted between the autumn of 2018 and the winter of 2019, a period in which the wasted products totaled 247 million kilograms.

The increased waste of fruit and vegetables in summer could be related to the fact that these foods are more sensitive to high temperatures, which means they spoil much faster if they aren't well preserved.

Despite the magnitude of the data, there was a slight 2% decrease in the waste of fruits and vegetables when compared to the more than 265 million kilograms wasted in the spring/summer of 2018.

Oriol Reull, director of Too Good To Go in Spain, highlighted this slight reduction in fruit and vegetable waste “as it shows that society is increasingly becoming more aware and is on the right track. However, the figures are still very high. That's why we must continue to insist on changing habits at home, on the importance of planning when shopping and correctly preserving food, but above all, on being creative in the kitchen, as there are many ways to take advantage of these products even when they are already very mature.”
