The Ivanisovo greenhouse complex in the city of Elektrostal, Russia, has started the production of a new variety of eggplant, as reported by the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Moscow region.
"A large greenhouse complex with a year-round vegetable production cycle has expanded its range with a new eggplant. This new vegetable is to be grown on a permanent basis," said the regional representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andrei Razin.
Angela is the name of the new variety that will be grown in Elektrostal. It weighs from 350 to 400 grams and is 22-25 cm long. Violet-white stripes are visible on the skin and the variety has white flesh and a long shelf life.
“Eggplant production will take place on an area of approximately 0.7 ha. About 15,000 plants will be planted in coconut substrate. The productivity is estimated at 45-50 kilograms per square meter,” said Razin.
In order to choose the right variety, the agronomists in charge tested several hybrids. In the 2019-2020 season, they produced seedlings and grew plants, assessing their appearance, productivity and resistance to pests and diseases. As a result, agronomists chose the Angela variety.
“Experimental batches of eggplants were delivered to brand stores in Iwanisowo to test the demand. The customer reception has been positive."
The Minister recalled that the area of the greenhouse complex is 20.5 ha. The high degree of automation and modern technologies allow for the year-round cultivation of about 20,000 tons of tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce.
