Leon van den Hombergh, Frankort & Koning about (water)melon sales:

"As disappointing as July sales were, as extreme they are now, in August"

Leon van den Hombergh often mentions the weather as a reason for (water)melon sales. Leon works for the Dutch company, Frankort & Koning. This summer is no exception. "As disappointing as the July sales were, as extreme they are now, in August," he says.

"Let's call it a delightful dynamic. It's now a daily challenge to fill all the demands and volumes. European supermarkets can't run out of melons."

"With this weather, people buy melons on impulse. That, and all the sales at retail level, ensure significant sales volumes," says the importer.

"The sharp rise in demand is also a welcome relief for growers in the Mediterranean cultivation areas. They've had a dismal time."

"So, they urgently needed these across-the-board price increases. Now part of the season can be saved. Let's hope, for now, we can keep benefitting from this summer weather," concludes Leon.
