Northern Turkey exports cherries to 32 countries

Tokat, a city located in northern Turkey, has started to harvest and export the 0900 cherry variety. This variety is larger in size and is exported to 32 countries; mainly to Russia as well as Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

The Akyamac ve Kemalpasa villages of Tokat are important producers of cherries and peaches. 3.000 producers make up 90% of the population of these villages and they earn their living from fruit cultivation. Cherry production ranks first among other fruits in the area.

Trader Alper Genc said: “We sell our products in the country and we also export them. Cherries from Tokat are exported mostly to Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Russia.’

Lower yields due to cold weather
Stating that the weather was cold this year, Genc said: “We are content with our business; however, we have lower yields this year. Production decreased by 70% compared to last year. Cold weather affected production. Prices depend on the quality. They change from 3 to 10 Turkish Lira (0.39 to 1.29 Euro) per kilo. Export prices are different, they range from 12 to 15 Turkish Lira (1.55 to 1.94 Euro).”
