Drop in prices for melons and watermelons

"After an exceptional start in May and early June with surprising prices and demand for watermelons and melons, things have now radically changed," reports Salvatore Lotta from Agricola Campidanese, a cooperative from Sardinia that commercializes its produce under the  "L'Orto di Eleonora" brand.

"Consumption has dropped over the past 10 days and so have prices, as the weather has not been exactly summery with rain in northern Italy, northern Europe and even in some areas in southern Italy."

"Quotations have dropped by as much as 40% for watermelons and the percentage reaches 60% for melons. Just to make an example: while, until a few days ago, netted melons of exceptional quality with a Birx level of up to 15° sold at €1.40/kg, now they are being sold at €0.75/kg. Daily orders have dropped from 400 packages per distribution platform to 150."

"Due to the reduction of cultivated crops all over the national territory, supply is rather limited. There is therefore a good chance of reaching higher and more stable prices for the rest of the 2020 campaign, though the low temperatures and frequent intense rain may affect consumption."
