Watermelons, melons and stone fruit account for most Spanish fruit exports in June

June is one of the months with the most exports for the Spanish fruit and vegetable sector, with watermelons, melons and stone fruit as the most popular products, representing 56% of the fruit volume exported by Spain in 2019.

Watermelon is the most exported fruit this month, with volumes that have grown strongly over the last five years, from 156,000 tons in June 2015 to 277,338 tons last year. As for the campaign as a whole, watermelon exports have gone from 654,000 tons in 2015 to 910,927 tons in 2019, according to data from the Customs Department, processed by FEPEX.

Looking at individual regions, Andalusia was the largest exporter in 2019, with 469,736 tons (+9% compared to 2018) worth 219 million Euro (-5%), followed by the Region of Valencia, with 182,674 tons (-6%) and 86.4 million Euro (-11%), and Murcia, with 179,319 tons (+2%) and 77.2 million Euro (+3%).

Melon is another of the fruits with the highest sales in June, with 105,345 tons in 2019. As for the whole year, melon exports have also increased, going from 434,599 tons in 2015 to 455,783 tons in 2019 (+5%).

When it comes to stone fruit, peaches record the best sales, with 73,323 tons in 2019, followed by nectarines, with 68,036 tons, apricots, with 33,211 tons, cherries, with 14,041 tons, and plums, with 11,128 tons.

Looking at the exports in June of the last five years, there has been a slight reduction in the cases of peaches, nectarines and plums. Peach exports in June 2015 amounted to 81,914 tons; those of nectarines stood at 99,506 tons, and those of plum reached 16,656 tons. At the same time, apricot and cherry exports have grown compared to June five years ago; by 5% and 7%, respectively.

If we look at the entire campaign, the export of peaches has increased by 5%, from 379,340 tons in 2015 to 399,861 tons in 2019; that of apricots has risen from 89,842 tons to 92,833 tons (+16%), and that of cherries has gone from 26,371 tons in 2015 to 28,928 tons in 2019 (+10%).

Also, nectarine exports have dropped by 9% over the last five years, from 470,162 tons to 428,951 tons, and those of plums have decreased by 13%, reaching 94,223 tons, according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes, processed by FEPEX.
